About this client/child:
Tommy (14) is an affectionate young man who enjoys watching nursery rhymes on his iPad, being active, going on trips and swimming. Tommy has Autism and Dravet syndrome which presents with developmental delay, causing difficulties with speech, motor skills, a learning disability and epilepsy. Tommy’s speech is limited but he can clearly express his likes and dislikes. All medication is administered via a PEG. He is mobile and can walk unaided however for longer journeys uses a wheelchair. Tommy can present with behaviour that challenges so you’ll be tuned into spotting the triggers and de-escalate any difficult situations. If he is upset, singing nursery rhymes is a great way to calm him down.

Overview of role:
As a Waking Night Carer you will give Tommy a bath, get him ready for bed, and support him throughout the night. You will observe, monitor, and record all seizures, administer medication, provide personal care, and help Tommy to get as much rest as possible. Tommy is awake frequently during the night and will often try to leave his bed, so you’ll be calm, patient, and consistent to encourage him to settle back into bed. While Tommy is asleep, there is an adjoining carer’s room where you can constantly monitor him via an audio/video display and attend to him as needed. Tommy’s seizures are self-resolving, but you will need to be prepared to give rescue meds, all training will be given. You need to always be alert, so as well as closely monitoring Tommy, you’ll keep occupied, watching TV, reading, studying, or maybe even doing a bit of yoga! There is access to a kitchen for tea/coffee etc. Night required: Friday 7.30pm to 7.30am. There is the opportunity to cover extra shifts during holidays and staff sickness. £17.00 gross per hour, £204.00 gross night.

Who this job would suit:

You will have a good understanding of working in a small team within a family environment and respect the family’s privacy. This is a permanent role, and we are looking for a Waking Night Carer who would like to commit to a long-term position and provide consistency and continuity for Tommy and his family.

What’s great about this job:
