About this client/child:
Ben aged 12 enjoys going out on day trips, shopping, watching films, listening to music, creative and messy play. He loves to spend time in his walker and going out on his bike. Ben has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and requires 24/7 care which includes manual handling and full personal care. He is non-verbal but communicates via multiple communication aids and is strong at expressing himself with help of gestures, eye pointing, tone of voice and using eye – gaze technology. Ben’s cognitive ability is very high so it’s really importance he gets age related stimulation.

Overview of role:
Ben has a full independent therapy team in place including Physio, OT, SLT, Clinical Psychologist and Conductive Education. As Ben’s Support Worker you will play an integral part of his morning and after school routine. During the mornings you will play an active role in Ben’s routine including assisting with the school run, either driving to school or sitting with him in the car.

During the afternoons your shift will begin by picking Ben up from school. You will ensure that Ben’s extensive daily routine is adhered to, especially with regards to his toileting, therapy targets and play/activities. A proactive approach is essential as well as maintaining consistency with routines already in place. He must be kept engaged in activities to keep him occupied and stimulated.
The family can offer 43.5 + hours per week. Week rate: £12.00 and weekend: £14.20 gross per hour. *The shifts that need covering are:

Monday: 2.00pm to 9.00pm
Tuesday: 7.00am to 10.30am
Wednesday: 7.00am to 10.30am then 2.00pm to 10.00pm
Thursday: 7.00am to 10.30pm them 2.00pm to 10.00pm
Friday 7.00am to 7.00pm.
Additional hours available during Saturday’s, school holidays and to provide cover for sickness/holiday.

Who this job would suit:
Communication is key and therefor any applicant will need to have experience with alternative communication methods. This can be caring for someone with audio impairments and/ or using alternative communication methods. Any applicant needs to practice great verbal communication skills. Sign language is a bonus. The client has a great need of emotional support through the day which is best supported with a proactive, positive and alert caring style. Emotional maturity and a reassuring, calming approach is essential for this role.
